Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates and this burgeoning family property is very much at the top of its game, producing wines of exceptional quality: scintillating, proper Burgundies, unusually across both reds and whites.
Features as one of the Top 10 Côte de Beaune Red Wine Producers and Top 10 Côte de Beaune White Wine Producers in Tim Atkin's Burgundy 2022 Special Report.
Self-confessed ‘acid freak’ Brian Sieve was especially careful with battonage and lees-stirring of the Chardonnays in 2022, to maintain freshness and verve, noting that it was not a high acid vintage. A little less new oak (not that there is ever more than just enough) and whole bunches in the reds than in the previous solar vintages, plus the gentler acid profile means the wines have a charm and immediacy to rival any vintage we’ve tasted from the domaine.
“Only 20% new oak here as Brian felt any more would mask the transparency and elegance of the wine this year. An intellectual nose – pure, medicinal and herbal, chamomile and wet stones. Palate is linear, layered, and long with succulent glycerol, and acidity like a saline net dragged by waves, pulling all the fruit, fresh nuts, spice and stones along the back palate. Monumental.”

What the critics say:
"The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a slightly more appley, linear and stonier bouquet than the more comely Folatières. You could argue the aromatics deliver more typicité. The palate is well-balanced, crisp and taut, with plenty of crushed stone character and more complexity towards the finish. This Puligny carries intellectual weight and should age well in bottle."
"Mid lemon yellow. A mix of engaging ripe fruit and some reduction. Complex, but also tightly wound, a tannic structure behind. It isn’t singing at this stage of its life, but I don’t doubt the qualities, so this should reach the upper end of the range. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. ****"
"A bit reserved at first pour, this wine quickly transitions in the glass. The whisper of reduction fades, the back palate acidity explodes and the "wow" factor of vivid spring florals and fresh orchard fruits arrives. The finish is long, rounded and creamy. This generous parcel of 0.85 hectares abuts Le Montrachet."
