Founded by Francesco Illy (of the Illy coffee family) in the late 1990s, Podere le Ripi is a regular favourite at our Brunello Tastings and is pushing the boundaries in Montalcino.
The vineyards are spread across different micro-terroirs, from the clay-rich soils of the eastern side of Montalcino to the rockier, high-altitude plots in the west. Farming has been biodynamic since 2010, a decision aimed at preserving the integrity of the land and bringing out the full expression of each site. The result is a range of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino that combines Sangiovese’s natural generosity with remarkable precision and freshness.
Honest Grapes has long admired Podere le Ripi’s thoughtful approach to winemaking and distinctive style, making them a natural addition to our portfolio.
The Wine
Podere le Ripi’s winemaking is defined by precision and experimentation, particularly in the élevage process. Uniquely, the estate ages certain wines in amphorae and unlined concrete to enhance purity and texture, alongside traditional large oak casks. The wines are fermented using indigenous yeasts and see long macerations to develop complexity without losing freshness.
We're huge fans of the Brunello di Montalcino "Lupi e Sirene", a beautifully structured and expressive single vineyard Brunello from the estate’s best plots, showing depth, elegance, and fine tannins. The "Cielo d'Ulisse" is also a favourite, more than worthy of its homeric title (Sky of Ulysses) with a more lifted, aromatic style, emphasising bright red fruit and floral notes with a refined, mineral backbone.
