Rothenpfad was mentioned in the historic Mosel wine map as among the best in the region. The red slate that dominates here provides the wines with a herbal-spicy note, balanced with a definite off-dry note.
Clemens and his wife Rita are a humble yet hugely respected duo, having built a cult following over the past 30 years for their incredibly precise, richly textured, and terroir-driven wines. In the world of Riesling, the Mosel is king, and their wines capture its essence like no other.
Since 2015, they’ve been part of Respekt, a group of biodynamic winemakers. But Clemens has been ahead of the game for decades—he ditched herbicides back in 1976 and embraced organic viticulture long before it became mainstream. Nowhere else is the connection between vine, winemaker, and terroir so perfectly expressed—and honestly, we’ve yet to find Rieslings quite like these.
What the critics say:
"A mouthfilling, full-bodied wine, although it only has 12% alcohol, the richness and creaminess giving an impression of weight. A wealth of dried thyme and rosemary with dried pears and quince. After all this, the elegance in the delicately flinty finish comes as a surprise. Matured for two years on the full lees. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink from release."
"The Marienburg Rothenpfad 2022 >reserve<, as it is referred to on the central part of the label, offers a quite aromatic and attractive nose of spices, pink grapefruit, smoke, minty herbs, toast, almond cream, thyme, and rosemary. The wine proves zesty and comparatively linear on the straight palate. It develops more precision and finesse in the very long, zesty, and spicy finish. The aftertaste is very long, herbal, and lightly tart. This is a superb dry Riesling."
