Torbreck Vintners, Woodcutter's Shiraz, 2022
- Red Still
- Shiraz
The team at Torbreck prides itself on their close collaboration with the dedicated growers of Barossa, who provide the fruit for their wines. Their approach is one of patience, allowing the vineyards to reach peak physiological ripeness before harvesting at the optimal moment for expressing the unique qualities of each block. During winemaking, they take a gentle and restrained approach, minimising human intervention and wine movement to maintain the integrity of the fruit.
Their respect for the vineyards and the wine is evident in their decision not to fine or filter their wines and to allow for barrel maturation in specially acquired oak from Forêt de Tronçais in Allier, a forest known for producing some of the finest oak and is allowed to progress naturally.
Drinking window: 2024 - 2035
What the critics say:
"The 2022 Woodcutter's Shiraz is a brilliant entrée to Barossa Shiraz. It exhibits all the earthy, red gravel, ironstone characters that infuse the tannic structure, while fleshed out by dense, purple fruit. It has levity and balance and freshness too, which is ultimately what makes it a great wine. There's gorgeous splay of spicy tannins, chewy and a little grippy. Matured for 10 months in seasoned oak, "the 2023 is coming out of oak as we speak now," says winemaker Ian Hongell. The fruit for this wine cascades down from a number of different sources within the Barossa (including Eden Valley). It's very good. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
