The Events Case: This Year's Stars
- White & Red Still
Our selection of the greatest wines from all our wonderful tastings this year!
Rianie Strydom & Jonathan Maltus, IKOYI White, 2023
In honour of our Ikoyi Launch Event on the 19th November, this is a must try for our regular event-goers. Highlighting our favorite variety, Cabernet Franc, we were eager to collaborate with Jonathan Maltus OBE, a pioneer among the original Saint Emilion garagistes. Jonathan has partnered with Rianie Strydom of Strydom Family Wines, a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild, who has procured top-quality, sustainably farmed grapes from vines planted in 2010 on the esteemed northern slopes of the Helderberg region in Stellenbosch. Meet Rianie in person at the event this month!
Bodega El Reventón, La Reina, 2022
Our love for the Catena wines at events is no secret, so we simply had to include this gorgeous red. This is the first vintage of their 40-yr old vines, unoaked garnacha, and shows significant potential, with impressive energy and tension and sappy and sapid fruits. It reminds us of our recent event in which we had Adrianna herself leading us through the evening.
Fleurie 'Les Labourons', Jane Eyre, 2020
With our lucky few coming with us to Burgundy this month, it felt right to mention Jane's spectacular wines. A pale pretty purple, this is sensual and startling, really fine, very Fleurie, with just the right touch of acidity. Worry not, as you'll still get the chance to meet her during our event on January 16th 2025!
Chapeau, Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon, 2020
Especially from our annual Icons Tasting, the vibrant cherry notes and fig complexity of this wine reveal a luxurious fruitcake and festive spice. Dare I say perfect for the festive season!? This blend is both sumptuous and lavish while maintaining elegance and tension. A favourite of our Head Wine Gur Tom.
Clemens Busch, Riesling Trocken, 2022
A favourite from our staff party, we had to mention this producer in our events case. Important to our Events Team is sustainability, and this delicious wines embodies just that. Clemens has long been a pioneer in organic viticulture, abandoning herbicides as early as 1976. In the early 80s his philosophy became more clearly defined as he met other Mosel producers interested in following these methods. At this time, he also started to experiment with lower sulphur levels and although he has made wines with zero sulphur, he thinks the combination of Riesling and the Lower Mosel climate calls for small additions to achieve the best results.
Tenuta San Leonardo, Vette di San Leonardo Sauvignon Blanc, 2022
Our Events Guru Beth's current favourite. Beth can't resist a fresh, fruity white wine, and this one's perfect. When you think San Leonardo, you might not think white. Until you try that wine that is! Try it yourself at our Christmas Market on the 26th November in Bloomsbury this month.
