Argiano has been on fire lately, and according to Eric Guido, while he’s not quite ready to crown them Montalcino’s most improved estate of the last decade, they’re definitely in the running.

Once overseen by the legendary Giacomo Tachis (of Sassicaia and San Leonardo fame), Solengo is a powerhouse blend: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot, and 5% Sangiovese. It brings together the structure and finesse of Bordeaux grapes with the warmth and richness of Tuscany. Right out of the gate, it’s full of plush plummy fruit, a hint of spice, and super-refined tannins, giving it both charm and backbone.

That said, it will only get better with age. Once fully matured, Solengo is right up there with the best Super Tuscans, often reminiscent of a top-class Bordeaux, but with a bold Italian soul.

OUR GROWERS

Tenuta di Argiano

Argiano is one of the oldest and most beautiful estates in Montalcino (and was one of the members of the original Brunello Consorzio).

Although the estate is situated in the south of the region which tends to be several degrees warmer than vineyards to the north, the vineyards achieve good elevation and comprise a high percentage of the mineral-rich marl in their clay limestone soil, also found in the hill of Montosoli – Montalcino’s widely accepted “Grand Cru” site.
