The 2023 growing season at Taupenot Merme began with a mild winter, followed by moderate spring and summer temperatures, and avoided extreme heat spikes. Early budbreak in April, mid-blossom in June, and veraison by late July led to a harvest from September 11-25, following a cooler, rainy spell in late August. Despite a season marked by an overall water deficit, careful organic management and two green harvests in July produced a balanced crop.
"Floral, with notes of autumn hedgerow berries and spice. High-energy palate with dark fruit, rusticity, brine, and spice."
Our note
The 2023 wines show moderate acidity with alcohol levels ranging from 12.3-13.6%, and phenolic ripeness reached across each cuvée. Reflecting a restrained, terroir-driven vintage, these wines lean towards elegance and subtle expression, rather than overt power.
The domaine features as one of the Top 20 Côte de Nuits Red Wine Producers in Tim Atkin's Burgundy 2023 Special Report.
Optimal drinking window: 2027 - 2047

What the critics say:
"The 2023 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a delectable bouquet, complex and quite mercurial in the glass with a melange of red and black fruit, melted tar and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, silky-smooth with well-judged acidity. Very harmonious with fine "shoulders" on the finish, this is a worthy follow-up to the 2022."
"Cask sample. Mid-pale ruby. Mid weight with fragrant, floral fruit. Concentrated, sweet red cherry and raspberry, but high-toned with fine, crisp acidity. Few tannins to speak of. Evidently serious but just a little closed today."
"Sweet red plums and vivid floral tones come through on the nose. Medium in body, this feels easy-going between its lightly clingy tannins and solid acidic refreshment. Underneath, however, is pent-up concentration that will need five to six years at the very least."
