Leeuwin Estate was born in the early to mid-70s when founders Denis and Tricia Horgan, decided to plant vines on their cattle ranch, a few miles in from the coast in Western Australia’s Margaret River, a few 100 miles south of Perth.
It has proved to be an inspired decision and with Robert Mondavi on hand to give advice and guidance in the early days, they hit the ground running. Within a couple of years of their first vintage (1979) they were winning both plaudits and awards worldwide.
"Incredibly vibrant and expressive on the nose with layers of lemon flesh, lime juice, apples and grapefruit at the forefront. Elevated and lifted notes of lemon myrtle, sweet jasmine, kaffir lime leaf, coriander seed and sea spray promote the purity and clarity. Lively and concentrated palate with focus and finesse. Cut lime and lemon zest meet with minerality and a tightly coiled acid structure. A saline thread is evident throughout with delicate and textural layers towards the crisp and talc-like finish."
Winemaker's Note
What the critics say:
"Not commonly found in this region, Leeuwin's location towards the southern end of Margaret River means it can craft deliciously delicate and fruity Riesling. This vintage is distinctively Aussie in style, with lime popsicle and orchard blossoms. It's bright and slender, sliced through the middle by a zingy line of citrusy acidity. Dry yet still mouthwatering, with a lingering limey finish, this is an easy drop on its own or with a number of summer seafood and green veg dishes."
