Based primarily in Kent, it's hard to believe that Gusbourne only started planting vines in 2004. Farming 60ha in Appledore, with a smaller estate in West Sussex, Gusbourne work with clones from Burgundy and champion low-intervention, sustainable farming, hand-picking the grapes during harvest and using rigorous selection at the sorting table to ensure only the best quality fruit makes it into the final wine.
They have been awarded IWC English Wine Producer of the Year a whopping three times (more than anyone else), and are the recipients of hundreds of medals, including a few fabled Decanter platinum awards.
What the critics say:
"A complex and expertly made English bubbly from one of the nation's top estates, this opens with some struck match reduction. It adds to (rather than detracts from) the aromatic medley of toasted nut, citrus, melon rind and crushed rock. A laser beam of lemony acidity shines bright on the textural palate, and a fine, vigorous fizz seems to prickle the tongue for a full minute."
"Lots of crisp apple and pear aromas with hints of summer berries in the nose. Satisfying interplay of bright fruit, lively mousse and creaminess on the well-balanced palate. Plenty of raspberry and candied-lemon character at the finish. A cuvee of 62% chardonnay, 28% pinot noir and 10% pinot meunier that was aged for over 2 years on the lees in bottle. Drink now. (Mar-2023)"
