The 2023 vintage at Domaine Henri Magnien stands out as a rare combination of exceptional quality and abundant yields, a balance seldom achieved in Burgundy. Meticulous grape selection during harvest ensured that only the finest fruit was used. Benefiting from a favourable flowering period, the vines produced well-formed bunches with a notable number of berries. The resulting wines are defined by their harmony: soft tannins, vibrant acidity, and a well-integrated richness.
"A later-harvested cuvée offering lush red fruit, generous but plush tannins, and a layered, mineral-inflected finish. This wine emphasises the expression of its specific terroir, showing depth, minerality, and a persistent, textured profile."
Our note
This vintage displays a marked shift toward dark red fruit and spiced profiles compared to 2022, with enhanced freshness and balance. Achieving perfect ripeness was crucial, as the domaine opted for destemming all fruit, avoiding the use of whole bunches. The wines, crafted entirely from the Magnien clone of Pinot Noir developed in 1850, exhibit a clear expression of terroir alongside their refined structure and vitality.
What the critics say:
"Sweet, intense, dark-forest fruits. Concentrated and velvety smooth. Supple, with a smooth sweep and a bitter-chocolate edge. There is a leafy, green sappy note which carries this wine. And a contrast in the wine between the rich, dark fruit and the freshness. It is streamlined. “The wind also concentrates the fruit.” 2026–35."
"Medium crimson colour. Fine and racy, elegant pinot here on this very white soil. Then it kicks on really very well on the palate, a lacy touch, silky across the refined tannins and with a long graceful finish. Very good. Charles held back and picked the Estournelles on September 15th, a decision which seems to have paid off Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted Nov 2024. ****"
"A perfumed, elegant and airy nose freely offers up its beautifully layered aromas of violet, dark currant, spice and an all but invisible application of oak. The refined and decidedly punchy light to barely middle weight flavors are borderline aggressively mineral-driven while exhibiting excellent length on the dusty and youthfully austere finale. This too could use better depth but it is undeniably classy. ♥ “Outstanding”"
