The 2023 growing season at Taupenot Merme began with a mild winter, followed by moderate spring and summer temperatures, and avoided extreme heat spikes. Early budbreak in April, mid-blossom in June, and veraison by late July led to a harvest from September 11-25, following a cooler, rainy spell in late August. Despite a season marked by an overall water deficit, careful organic management and two green harvests in July produced a balanced crop.
"Light but vibrant red cherries with sweet spice. Fresh, attractive red berry character and excellent length."
Our note
The 2023 wines show moderate acidity with alcohol levels ranging from 12.3-13.6%, and phenolic ripeness reached across each cuvée. Reflecting a restrained, terroir-driven vintage, these wines lean towards elegance and subtle expression, rather than overt power.
Optimal drinking window: 2028 - 2044
What the critics say:
"The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with pretty redcurrant and raspberry fruit alongside neatly enmeshed oak. The palate is medium-bodied and lightly spiced with plump red berry fruit, pointed acidity and what you might misconstrue as stem-induced pepperiness toward the finish (there are no stems). A lovely Gevrey."
"Cask sample. Mid ruby. Quite dignified and noble. Cherries and red flowers on the nose, with good depth, weight and intensity. Powdery, chalky tannins with excellent length, but all quite understated and restrained."
