We’re always championing "old vines, young winemakers," but even we’re a little in awe of Envinate – the Spanish collective setting the wine world alight. Founded by a group of ambitious Spaniards in the mid-2000s, Envinate ("Wine Yourself") is redefining what’s possible with Spain’s old vines. Their mission? Sourcing ancient vineyards – some up to 300 years old (!) – and crafting some of the most thrilling, terroir-driven wines in the world. The results are incredible, with scores up to 100 points in the Wine Advocate, and prices that arguably offer the best value in wine today.
Their finest work often hails from Tenerife, where volcanic soils bring a chiselled, mineral edge to their wines. And today, we’re delighted to offer La Santa Ursula 2022, an electrifying red blend of local heroes Listán Negro and Negramoll. Sourced from vines over 100 years old, this wine sees a touch of whole-cluster fermentation and a dash of carbonic maceration, resulting in a vibrant, complex expression that’s as captivating as its origins.
"Woodsmoke, damp moss, tincture of cloves, iodene, embers, charred meat, old cracked leather, and incense all evoke the aromas of an old apothecary or abandoned tin mine. Sweeter, fruitier notes push through of sour cherry, spiced dark plums, cacao nibs and an aged balsamic hint. Palate is very geological, crunchy with high-toned fruit, dried cranberries, powdered stones, braced by dusky, dusty tannins, and a fine line of piercing red citrus acidity. Ferrous and sanguinous, but precise, with keen energy and drive."

This is only the third vintage of La Santa Ursula, and it’s already turning heads, earning 95 points from Luis Gutiérrez. Fans of a low-intervention, Burgundian approach to winemaking will feel right at home here, but make no mistake – this is seriously good juice for any wine lover. Quantities are highly limited, and at just £178 per case of six, snap this beauty up while you can!
What the critics say:
"The 2022 La Santa de Úrsula is balsamic and reveals notes of rose petals and talcum powder. The fruit is darker (riper), and it has a juicy palate with fine tannins and a long, lingering finish. 8,000 bottles and 100 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2023"
