Tommaso Cortonesi’s grandfather bought La Mannella in the 1970s. The estate spreads over 56 hectares, eight of which produce Brunello di Montalcino. The major vineyard is around the winery at La Mannella, just north of Montalcino itself, but there is another vineyard near Castelnuovo dell’ Abate, to the south east of the town.
Originally just one Brunello was made, a blend from the two separate vineyards, but in the 1990s, Tommaso and his father realised that the two vineyards had distinctly different soil composition. They decided that better wine would be made if each terroir was properly realised in the bottle, and thus were born Poggiarelli (in the south east) and La Mannella (in the north).

What the critics say:
"Produced only in superlative years since 1995, La Mannella is a tribute to the estate’s oldest vines in the cool northern reaches of Montalcino. Despite long ageing in Slavonian oak casks, it exhibits striking vibrancy. Yellow broom and anise infuse black and red currants, which ring out on the palate with precision and intensity. A fleshy core is well enveloped with assertive yet supple tannins. It's not a big wine but delivers plenty of transparent fruit and mouth-cleansing acidity. An excellent achievement."
"The Cortonesi 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva La Mannella delivers savory spice and toast with lots of extra oak that adds to a feeling of weight and concentration. Like many wines from this vintage, you'll notice a bigger and more concentrated fruit profile. In the case of this wine, you really do taste that extra year of aging (totaling 48 months in oak), with lingering smoke and savory tones. You also get cooked cherry and baked plum, and there is a fragrant hint of red rose on the finish. This is a 6,326-bottle release."
