The 2023 vintage reflects a year of moderate warmth with consistent sunshine, leading to steady, well-paced ripening. Although temperatures weren’t extreme, the shift to warmer nights and milder days contributed to extended growing periods. This translated into wines that are strikingly fresh, with lower alcohol levels, vivid acidity, and vibrant character—brighter and more approachable compared to recent years.

"Big and bold, this wine showcases pineapple, honey, and a touch of cinnamon spice. With a 2007 vineyard replanting complementing 75-year-old vines, it is layered and textured with excellent acidity. Already approachable, it promises to deepen with age."
Our note

Both red and white wines achieved impressive yields, the largest ever recorded for the estate, with terroir expression and balance shining through. For reds, comparisons to the 2017 vintage are apt, showcasing elegance and precision. Whites carry their hallmark freshness and minerality, further underscored by the decision to reduce the percentage of new oak due to the larger volumes produced.

The domaine features as one of the Top 10 Côte de Beaune Red Wine, and White Wine Producers in Tim Atkin's Burgundy 2023 Special Report.

Drinking window: 2028 - 2040

What the critics say:

95/100Charles Curtis MW, Decanter

"Creamy, rich and very good, the Corton-Charlemagne from de Montille boasts ripe apple fruit aromas with an edge of hawthorn flowers and spice. The texture is suitably dense but not heavy, and there is enough acidity to bring everything into balance. Best of all, there is plenty – 22 barrels in 2023, since the domaine owns a hectare in Corton Pougets that it purchased in 2004. This wine should open in five to seven years and drink for another 30."

18/20Jancis Robinson

"Racy and crackling and so much more life than many examples. Fireworks on the palate. There is weight but such energy, too."

OUR GROWERS

Domaine de Montille

Domaine de Montille is now in its ninth generation under the stewardship of sibling duo Étienne & Alix, who have largely remained true to their father’s vision of creating elegant, pure and balanced wines.

In fact Étienne was instrumental in pushing the sustainability of the Domaine by abandoning all chemical fertilisers and herbicides in 1985 and fully transitioning to biodynamic farming in 2005.
