Founded over a century ago, Domaine Georges Lignier is a historic estate with exceptional vineyards concentrated in and around Morey-Saint-Denis, in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits.
As wine expert Jasper Morris notes, “One of the strengths of the 16-hectare domaine is to have mature vineyards… replanted systematically in the 1950s with good vine material, not clones.” This careful replanting strategy has provided the domaine with a foundation of healthy, low-yielding old vines that produce fruit of extraordinary character and complexity.
Since 2008, the domaine has been under the stewardship of Benoît Stehly, the nephew of Georges Lignier. Benoît worked alongside his uncle for over a decade, gaining invaluable experience in both vineyard management and winemaking before taking full responsibility for the estate.
Benoît’s philosophy emphasises meticulous vineyard work, sustainable practices, and minimal intervention in the cellar to allow the unique qualities of each parcel to shine. As a result, the wines of Domaine Georges Lignier have gained recognition for their balance, finesse, and ability to age gracefully, offering an authentic expression of Burgundy’s remarkable diversity.
What the critics say:
"As with the Clos St-Denis, the domaine has a big chunk (1.05 ha) of this Grand Cru, with parcels spread across much of its surface. These are 70-year olds that deliver a rambunctious pack of fruit on the palate as well as crisp, guiding tannins and tingly freshness. The pleasingly dry finish reminds me of black forest cake flavors: Marasca cherries, dark chocolate and mocha-tinged cream."
"A wine with moderate concentration and attractive aromas of ripe blackberry and plum, underscored with floral notes and a hint of earth. The texture is very silky and delicate, with medium weight and enough freshness to bring it into balance. This wine should be approachable early, yet will effortlessly age for a decade or more. Yields were generous, and this was 90% destemmed to make room in the tank."
