Château Fonroque, 2020
Château Fonroque, 2020
- Red Still
- Merlot, Cabernet Franc
- Organic
- Biodynamic
The first biodynamic château to be part of St Émilion Grand Cru, Fonroque is always one of the best value picks from Bordeaux En Primeur.
The estate was the original home of the Moueix family, who own Trotanoy & Lafleur-Petrus in Pomerol, as well as Dominus in Napa, though they sold the château to the Guillard family in 2017 (Alain Moueix has stayed on as an active consultant).
Stylistically the wine is all about elegance and finesse, and the 2020 is arguably their finest vintage to date, with some glowing scores from all major critics, including 93 points from Jane Anson.
Drinking window: 2025 - 2040
What the critics say:
"Subdued aromatics, this is attractive with raspberry flavours rippling through it and an appealing density, more old school and restrained than some, with classic balance. As it opens up, floral raspberry leaf appears in the best way, juicy and unfussy with crushed herbs and baked earth. Enjoyable, definitely not trying too hard and succeeding to charm. Certified biodynamic, Alain Moueix. A yield of 40hl/ha."
"Cask sample. Very attractive nose with leather, pure dark-berry fruit and crushed violets. Lovely textured and layered palate with supple tannins, sweet plummy notes, cinnamon and spice, herbal notes and well-judged acidity. The oak is nicely balanced against the fruit core and the alcohol is very well integrated."
