The wines from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard have a clear purity and minerality as well as a lovely weight and richness of fruit. Céline Fontaine and her husband Fred Robert (formerly of Armand Rousseau) specialise in whites, and over the past decade have raised their stock exponentially.
Céline has introduced using only natural yeast and prefers to age the top cru’s slightly longer in tank, meaning they age more slowly in bottle than we saw previously. This is a well-regarded estate which has moved into its next epoch and with quality only on the rise, there is a lot to love about all of their wines.
"...the 2020 is more serious. 2022 is more charming. The reds are like 2019, for the easy ripeness, but the structure is more like 2020. What impresses me about this vintage is the concentration.”
Winemaker's notes (worldoffinewine.com)
Morgeot, which lies mid-slope with a south-easterly exposure, is a perfect example of the Chassagne-Montrachet style. Morgeot lies on the border between the Côte d'Or and Saone-et-Loire regions, and it was actually the boundary in the Gallo-Roman period. At this time the plot of land was called Morga (from the Latin "Margo" which means edge or border) from which today's name Morgeot is derived.
Although the Morgeot soil is composed of heavy red clay and limestone and usually produces wines of robust and rich characters - the Fontaine-Gagnard Morgeot Blanc is rather more citrussy than many.
Optimal drinking window: Now - 2043

What the critics say:
"Ripe, peachy aroma, with a rounded, succulent, and generous palate. It’s smooth and alluring and nicely balanced, and there’s freshness on the finish. Inviting."
"A wafting and moderately ripe nose features hints of wood, pear and apple compote, floral wisps and a spice nuance. The rich, delicious and powerful bigger-bodied flavors brim with sappy dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the firm acid spine shaping the rustic but long and complex finale. This is a classic Morgeot of generosity and volume that could be enjoyed young or held for up to a decade."
"The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a terroir-driven, minerally bouquet with crushed stone filtering through the orchard fruit and subtle hazelnut and litchi scents developing in the glass. The palate is well-balanced, perhaps just a little conservative/timid at the moment, precise yet bashful. Hints of rose water and peach skin towards the finish. One of the prettiest cuvées from Fontaine-Gagnard this year. "
