The 2023 growing season at Taupenot Merme began with a mild winter, followed by moderate spring and summer temperatures, and avoided extreme heat spikes. Early budbreak in April, mid-blossom in June, and veraison by late July led to a harvest from September 11-25, following a cooler, rainy spell in late August. Despite a season marked by an overall water deficit, careful organic management and two green harvests in July produced a balanced crop.
"Intense red cherry and strawberry flavors, with layers of sweet and savory fruit on a plush, velvety palate."
Our note
The 2023 wines show moderate acidity with alcohol levels ranging from 12.3-13.6%, and phenolic ripeness reached across each cuvée. Reflecting a restrained, terroir-driven vintage, these wines lean towards elegance and subtle expression, rather than overt power.
Optimal drinking window: 2027 - 2045
What the critics say:
"The 2023 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru unfurls with well-delineated redcurrant, cranberry and rooibos scents on the nose, and just a hint of marmalade in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and more amplitude than the Corton-Rognet, leading to a persistent and judiciously spiced finish. Excellent."
"Cask sample. Mid-pale ruby. Rich, sweet red cherry and redcurrant on the nose and palate. Sweet, ripe, concentrated fruit and quite full-bodied for a Charmes. Firm structure and long length. Opulent, quite open with a floral flourish at the end. Salty too."
