Tommaso Cortonesi’s grandfather bought La Mannella in the 1970s. The estate spreads over 56 hectares, eight of which produce Brunello di Montalcino. The major vineyard is around the winery at La Mannella, just north of Montalcino itself, but there is another vineyard near Castelnuovo dell’ Abate, to the south east of the town.
Originally just one Brunello was made, a blend from the two separate vineyards, but in the 1990s, Tommaso and his father realised that the two vineyards had distinctly different soil composition. They decided that better wine would be made if each terroir was properly realised in the bottle, and thus were born Poggiarelli (in the south east) and La Mannella (in the north).
Poggiarelli has rocky soil, rich in marl, whereas at La Mannella it is mainly clay and limestone. Poggiarelli is at about 420 m.a.s.l and La Mannella is 280-350 m.a.s.l. The oldest vines were planted in 1983, and another two plots were planted in 1998. All their wines are 100% Sangiovese.

What the critics say:
"The Cortonesi 2020 Brunello di Montalcino La Mannella shows a mix of dark fruit and savory spice that adds to a bold aromatic profile. It delivers a medium finish and a point of leanness on the mid-palate that leads to a polished mouthfeel. This is the easier of the two single-vineyard expressions made by this estate (created with a food-friendly 13.5% alcoholic content). There is tannic bite on the close, but you also get plenty of sweet cherry fruit and blackcurrant. Production is 35,000 bottles. "
"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino La Mannella smolders in the glass, earthy and tightly wound. Grilled herbs and crushed black raspberries are lifted by a hint of menthol. This displays silken textures and medium-bodied weight as waves of ripe red and blue fruits slowly saturate the senses. It finishes spicy and long, leaving edgy tannins offset by residual acidity as hints of tart blackberry fade. "
"The estate’s home plots are nestled under the town of Montalcino. Picked between 20-30 September, the 2020 is a beautiful interpretation of the vintage. Still fittingly youthful and restrained, the nose hints at yellow blossom, tobacco and wet stone. There's lovely juiciness on the palate too, with no hint of under- or over-ripeness, just perfectly à point. Self-assured tannins hold everything in place, and the finish reverberates with bitter orange peel. As the estate will not be releasing a Riserva, their oldest vines in La Mannella – planted in 1983 – are incorporated into this."
