The latest 2021 release of Barbaresco Santo Stefano from the iconic Castello di Neive - the birthplace of Nebbiolo - is shaping up to be one of the finest vintages yet since the estate took production into its own hands (the legendary Bruno Giacosa bought the grapes previously).
Castello di Neive is one of the most historical in Piedmont, yet flies slightly under the radar. Dominating the picturesque village of Neive, it was in the castle’s cellars that Frenchman Louis Oudart was responsible for the evolution of Nebbiolo in the 1800s from a sweet white wine to a statuesque red. Castello di Neive is also the longstanding owner of Barbaresco’s most prestigious cru vineyards – Santo Stefano, made famous by Bruno Giacosa, who purchased their grapes.
The wines are made in a traditional style and very long-lived but offer one of the purest and most thrilling expression of Nebbiolo when mature.
What the critics say:
"Lustrous and just mid ruby. Brooding intensity on the nose and at the same time showing a kind of coolness. Slowly opens up on the palate to raspberry fruit. Great purity and depth and with the perfect dose of fine, grainy tannins. Suave, cool and with enormous focus. Still a little embryonic."
"Deceptively medium in body, the 2021 Barbaresco Albesani Santo Stefano packs a pretty serious punch. Readers should plan on cellaring this for at least a few years, as it needs time to come into its own. Bright acids and beams of supporting tannin shape this classy yet reticent Barbaresco."
