Whilst wines from Burgundy's golden escarpment generate most of the headlines, there exists a world of top-class producers beyond the Côte d'Or making some pretty incredible wines: here's a mixed case which shines a light on a few of our favourites.
Juliénas, Château-Fuissé, 2019
Has all the hallmarks of a top Juliénas with notes of peony in the bouquet together with raspberries, redcurrants and strawberries. Very fine fruit on the palate, a sophisticated tannic structure with good intensity and a long finish.
Mâcon Uchizy, Meurgey-Croses, 2022
Fennel tops on the nose (and finish) defines this very elegant Mâcon. Salty grapefruit nose, and riper yellow apples, leads to a smoky, succulent attack, and peardrop-shaped mid-palate, which broadens in middle with ripe orchard fruit and nutmeg, but tightens at the end.
Chablis, Samuel Billaud, 2021
Steely on the palate with a splash of citrus and impeccable length. Impressive medium-weight flavours wrapped in a markedly dry and complex palate.
Rully Blanc Premier Cru 'Margotés', Domaine P. et M. Jacqueson, 2022
Zippy, zesty citrus fruit with delicate notes of pear and lemon meringue. With a dash of minerality across a tidy palate, it's a wine full of charm.
Mercurey Rouge Premier Cru 'Vasées', Domaine Francois Raquillet, 2022
A dynamic, floral nose with stem-driven spiciness and black cherries. Fine, powdery tannins and an elegant acidity gently wrapping around abundant ripe fruit.
Fleurie, Jane Eyre, 2021
Bright cherry aromas and subtle peppery aromas, with powdery tannins providing structure and a vibrant acidity which carries onto the long finish. A fine wine which showcases the best of the Gamay grape.
