One of the surest signs of winter finally giving ways to spring is the early April release of the latest vintages from Patagonian powerhouse: Bodega Chacra. Once again, the scores for both Piero’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are all 97+ points and yet still offer unparalleled for value, even more so than usual, with Mainqué Chardonnay and Pinot Noir “55” coming with 11% price reductions on last year. In Burgundian terms: Grand Cru quality for the cost of village level wines.
Bodega Chacra was created back in 2003 when Piero Incisa della Rochetta, the grandson of the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, founder of Tenuta San Guido and creator of Sassicaia, tasted a wine from the Rio Negro Valley in a New York restaurant and instantly saw the full potential. The estate originally consisted of a single plot, planted way back in 1932, which had been simply abandoned. Other sites soon followed, also composed of old vines (planted in 1955 and 1967), all 290-330m elevation above sea level.
The remote, isolated vineyards are naturally disease resistant and farmed biodynamically, with the reds allowed to mature slowly in up to 20% new Burgundian oak barrels and bottled without fining or filtration. With 99 points, Bodega Chacra Pinot Noir "32" 2023 offered today features in James Suckling's top 100 wines of 2024. The Pinot Noir "55" is also a stunner, equalling last year’s best ever Suckling rating - 97 points, and remaining one of Argentina's best value reds at just £195 per case of 6 IB (11% less than last year’s price). Made in partnership with Jean-Marc Roulot of Meursault fame, the Chardonnay is planted on limestone rich plots, much like the finest vineyards of the Côte d’Or, imbuing the wines with an impressive geological intensity. These have more than a touch of Roulot purity and finesse to them. James Suckling awards the Bodega Chacra Chardonnay 2023 98 points, whilst the impressive Mainque is also top value with 97 points and priced just £195 per case (11% less than last year).
The combination of Tuscan and Burgundian winemaking royalty, the rave reviews and incredible value – including discounts to last year, makes this a very special set of releases.
