A few weeks ago we hosted Edy del Popomi and his son Santiago for a tasting of the new 2021s from PerSe, and the wines were simply incredible. Edy described 2021 as a cool vintage, exactly the conditions PerSe look for in Gualtallary, arguably Argentina's first Grand Cru site high up in the Uco Valley.
The style at PerSe is hard to put into words, but we found ourselves reaching for expressions such as chalky, elegant and delicate to describe the wines, and they really are unlike anything you find in Argentina. The 2021s are a real feather in the cap for Edy, who was ecstatic about the vintage. The Vinous' scores are the highest PerSe has received, and whilst the Wine Advocate has yet to publish their reviews, the 2019 La Craie received 100 points and we all felt the 2021 was even better!
This is cerebral winemaking at its best, with each minuscule 0.2-0.5ha plot in Gualtallary obsessively selected for its unique microclimate and terroir, always with the goal of producing the finest cool-climate Malbecs from the region. Production is comparable to Grand Cru Burgundy with around 1,500 bottles filled annually of each, and given Edy and David are now allocating La Craie and Iubileus in cases of six instead of four, these unicorns are only going to be harder to find.
Est. delivery in early 2025.
