About Juliénas, Château-Fuissé, 2019
This traditional Beaujolais has the tell tale hallmark of Juliénas with the notes of peony in the bouquet together with raspberries, redcurrants and strawberry. It fills the mouth with flavour and has very fine fruit on the palate with good intensity and finishes with a long aftertaste with a fine tannic structure.
First class Beaujolais.
This 2019 is drinking at its peak now, with the primary fruit perfectly balanced against the emerging complexity. Over the next 2-3 years, expect the floral notes to integrate further while developing subtle earthy undertones typical of aged Gamay on granite. The tannins will soften gradually, making the wine even more approachable, though it should maintain its fresh fruit character until 2030. Beyond that, the wine will start to lose its vibrant aromatics and settle into a more rustic style.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceBright ruby red with good depth and clarity.
NoseClassic Juliénas aromatics of fresh peony and violet lift from the glass, followed by ripe raspberry and redcurrant. There's a subtle granite minerality underneath that speaks to the terroir. The floral character becomes more pronounced as the wine opens.
PalateMedium-bodied with excellent fruit intensity, filling the mouth with raspberry and strawberry flavours. The tannins are fine but present, giving structure without overwhelming the fruit. Good acidity keeps everything fresh and balanced, with that characteristic Juliénas elegance shining through.
FinishLong and satisfying with lingering red fruit and a mineral, almost granitic persistence.
Overall impressionFirst-class Beaujolais that captures the floral elegance and fruit purity that makes Juliénas special.
Food Pairings
In the Beaujolais region, this would be the perfect match for coq au vin made with the local wine, or the traditional andouillette sausages grilled over vine cuttings. Locals would pair it with charcuterie from nearby Lyon - perhaps some saucisson sec with crusty bread and cornichons. The wine's bright acidity and moderate tannins also make it ideal with the region's goat cheeses like Chaource, or simply roasted chicken with herbs from the hillside gardens.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve lightly chilled at 14-16°C to enhance the floral aromatics and bright fruit character. No need to decant - this wine is meant to be enjoyed for its freshness and immediate appeal. Use Burgundy glasses if you have them, as the wider bowl will concentrate the delicate peony and violet notes that make Juliénas distinctive.
Juliénas sits on the granite and schist soils that define the northern Beaujolais crus, with vineyards planted between 250-400 metres elevation. The granite provides excellent drainage and imparts the mineral backbone that gives structure to Gamay, while the cooler temperatures at altitude preserve the floral character and bright acidity. This combination of poor soils and elevation stress creates wines with more concentration and ageing potential than simple Beaujolais.
Juliénas is the smallest of the ten Beaujolais crus, covering just 580 hectares in the northern hills. Named after Julius Caesar, it's renowned for producing the most floral of all the crus, with distinctive peony and violet notes. The appellation rules require 100% Gamay and minimum alcohol of 10%, but the best producers like Château-Fuissé achieve much more concentration and complexity than these minimums suggest.
The 2019 growing season in Beaujolais started with a bang — literally. Hail battered vineyards across the region in June, reducing yields but concentrating what remained on the vines. A blistering summer followed, with temperatures soaring well above average and precious little rain to cool things down. By harvest time in early September, growers were picking healthy, sun-scorched grapes with thick skins and intense concentration — quite different from the fresh, gulpable style Beaujolais had built its reputation on.
What emerged was a vintage that split opinion faster than a corkscrew argument. The Gamay grapes produced wines with deeper colour and more structured tannins than usual, showing blackberry and plum flavours rather than the typical bright red fruits. Some producers embraced this richer style, whilst others found themselves swimming against the current of their own terroir. The wines are drinking well now but have the backbone to age until 2027 — unusual longevity for a region better known for immediate pleasure than cellar-worthy bottles.
