There are only a handful of wines in Burgundy that carry the full weight of the region's mythology, and Clos de Bèze is unquestionably one of them. Armand Rousseau's parcel in this ancient, walled grand cru — historically ranked above even Chambertin itself — produces something that manages to be both monumental and extraordinarily fine-boned.

The 2023 vintage, a warm and sunny year that delivered ripe, generous fruit across the Côte de Nuits, nevertheless shows the precision and restraint that is Rousseau's signature: red fruit rather than black, mineral rather than opulent, silk rather than velvet.

What the critics say:

97-99/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2023 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a transcendent bouquet with a cornucopia of red berry fruit, hints of pressed flowers, forest floor and a tinge of oyster shell. Stunning delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins and more tension and energy than the Chambertin. This is also lighter on its feet, with a pixelated finish that fans out gloriously. Heavenly. "

96-98/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"Possibly an even brighter and more vigorous purple. Deeply heady but in no way overdone. Just a superbly welcoming sensuality. Such a gracious and graceful whole. This is a lovely of wines range from Rousseau this year, very much in their own classical style."

OUR GROWERS

Domaine Armand Rousseau

The domaine needs little introduction. At the very top echelons of Burgundy and rightly so, the quality found at this address is matched by very, very few. Currently managed by Eric Rousseau, grandson of Armand, alongside Eric’s daughter Cyrielle, who continue to push the envelope of quality ever further whilst keeping true to their roots.

Winemaking is traditional in style with small yields and old vines creating wines of great finesse which often seem to defy logic in their lightness in youth, yet putting on layer after layer of depth and complexity as they age (and they age considerably, too!). Rousseau was one of the pioneers in the 1930s who pushed for domaine bottled wines – at that time, everything was sold via negociants.

Thanks to some astute buying over the years, in particular when Charles, Armand’s son, took over the domaine in 1959, they hold a whopping 8.5ha of Grand Cru vineyards spread around some of the most famous and sought after names the region, including both Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, as well as the likes of Charmes and Clos de la Roche too.
